The combination of constant humidity and repeated thermal cycles accelerates any electrochemical corrosion mechanism: condensation keeps an electrolyte film on the metal surface for longer than a one-off exposure to water would, and alkaline detergents can attack finishes not designed for that pH range. On top of this comes the thermal fatigue of the component itself, which expands and contracts with every cycle.
For a dishwasher hinge or a closure fitting, this means the selection criterion is not simply that it resists water; the goal is to withstand condensation-drying cycles, contact with alkaline detergent, and thermal variation, without losing dimensional tolerance or finish adhesion.
Zamak and Corrosion: What Happens When Zamak Oxidizes
Zamak, like any zinc alloy, naturally forms a surface layer of zinc oxide when it comes into contact with moisture and oxygen; under normal ambient conditions, this layer is passivating and protects the interior of the part. The problem in an industrial dishwasher environment is that alkaline detergent cycles can dissolve this passive layer faster than it regenerates, leaving the base metal exposed to progressive corrosion if there is no additional protective finish.

In appliance-grade zamak generally, and not only in dishwashers but also in ovens and refrigerators, the hinge is typically the most mechanically demanding component, because, in addition to corrosion, it withstands opening and closing cycles across a wide temperature range. A dishwasher hinge design must account for the pivot radius, functional clearance in both hot and cold conditions, and protection of the pin against moisture ingress by capillary action.
Finish Specification for Humid, Alkaline Environments
Chrome plating, passivation, and cataphoresis (e-coating/KTL) are, in general, the finishes with the best performance against sustained chemical exposure and humidity, since they form a uniform layer even on complex geometries with angles that are difficult to cover using other processes, such as the inside of a hinge. Electrolytic chrome plating offers a better aesthetic result but requires tighter control of base porosity, since any discontinuity in the chrome layer exposes the zamak directly to the dishwasher's aggressive environment.
